My Review Grade A
I’m giving it a fan girl 5 star rating, even though it’s more of a 4 star book for me. But It’s Roarke people…Eve and Roarke. So 5 stars or Grade A
New York to Dallas is a fitting title for this latest installment of the in death series, and fans can tell the series is winding down, and coming to an end. Story ARC’s are being closed, Loose ends tied down, and memories put to bed.
LT Eve Dallas is taking on a serial pedophile back from her rookie days who escaped from Prison, and the villain takes her to Dallas where she confronts not only him, but memories of her father, and a much worse realization about her mother.
I thought the book was done very well, and I don’t think anyone can write a suspense cop drama quite like Robb/Roberts. There is just something about this series that calls to me, and forces me to read it. The characters are like old friends, ones I want to be with, even after 40+ books. That’s simply amazing.
Lately, every book seems to have one word that is irritating. UNSUB is used a lot starting about 3 books ago, but in this book the word was ANAL. I’m sorry editors, but every time I saw the word I giggled, cringed and rolled my eyes. “I need the ANAL” O.o why can’t we say Analysis? Really? It happened all the time and it drove me crazy. I wonder if they did it on purpose. lol
This was a pretty emotional book, not so much with the big revelation, though I felt for EVE during that part, but we are back into her nightmares, and that part always sucks the life out of me. The ending was a killer, and it went farther than I thought it would, I’m glad it didn’t get any further however, it was enough. Almost too much to witness. Eve and Roarke are such a powerful couple. I don’t mean that in the fighting sense, just the intense way they get and love one another. It’s heartwarming to me. Some might be turned off by the violent aspects of them–the need to fight and spar, bicker and bitch, but honestly, it’s who the characters are, and I can appreciate them and the way they are together.
I missed the other characters. Though we see them briefly. I missed Peabody’s wittiness and unfailing calm, I missed Ian’s flashy outfits, and Baxters’ ludeness, Truehart’s innocence, I missed Feeney and Whitney and I even missed Summerset. I missed Mavis and baby bella. Part of the disconnect I felt at times, was because Eve felt disconnected, I’m sure it was meant to be that way, but still, it wore on me like a bad suit. I hope in the next anthology we see the gang.
Peabody headed her own side of the chase in New York, while Eve took the Dallas side. Gearing up for Peabody taking over as Primary, and Eve going to Captain (This is merely my speculation, but I can hope!)
“Why do you do that? Push and order and threaten.”
“Because you’re in pain, and too much of a bloody mule to admit it. Because I’m in the often maddening position of loving you beyond all reason, so you can infuriate and rip me to pieces at the same time. Now take the fucking pill.”
“Okay. Look, why don’t you take care of the half a million things you’ve been letting dangle in Roarke’s Empire of Everything?”
“Catchy title. I may use it one day.”
Mira spoke quietly as Roarke switched to Irish and mutters. “He’s devolving.”
“No, he just gets more Irish when he’s frustrated.”
