3.5 Skulls – B

Opening Moves is a good read if you can take it for what it is – straight erotica. There is very little plot here, and while that’s been an issue for me in the past, I’m getting over it. I’ve read so many books classified as erotica that had plots with so much potential and eventually fell flat that I’m OK with no plot anymore with this particular genre. I want to walk away from a read satisfied or thirsting for just a bit more, but I don’t want to be left wondering what the hell happened and why there are so many loose threads. Throw in a few bits of information about each character to make them distinguishable, and I’m good to go.

I think the idea behind the names – Rook, Bishop, and Knight – was inventive. Adorable even. The dynamics between each of the men, and eventually Jason, were very interesting. It’s clear that while they all love each other, this is Bishop’s show and they’ve all jumped on for the ride. I’m intrigued to find out what Jason’s part in all of this will be, and how hard it will be for him to accept it since he was so reluctant to embrace his attraction to men. While I do wish we’d learned more about how the men earned their money and just a bit more about what makes each of them tick, I was happy with what I got. This is the first in a series, so I’m hoping for more of that in future installments. Opening Moves was a hot read, and I’ll be going back for more!

Walk Through FireWalk Through Fire by Kristen Ashley
Book #4 in Chaos
Genre: Contemporary/MC Romance
Publication Date: October 27th, 2015
ARC provided by Grand Central Publishing and Netgalley

Synopsis from Goodreads: Millie Cross knows what it’s like to burn for someone. She was young and wild and he was fierce and even wilder-a Chaos biker who made her heart pound. They fell in love at first sight and life was good, until she learned she couldn’t be the woman he needed and made it so he had no choice but to walk away. Twenty years later, Millie’s chance run-in with her old flame sparks a desire she just can’t ignore. And this time, she won’t let him ride off . . .

Bad boy Logan “High” Judd has seen his share of troubles with the law. Yet it was a beautiful woman who broke him. After ending a loveless marriage, High is shocked when his true love walks back into his life. Millie is still gorgeous, but she’s just a ghost of her former self. High’s intrigued at the change, but her betrayal cut him deep-and he doesn’t want to get burned again. As High sinks into meting out vengeance for Millie’s betrayal, he’ll break all over again when he realizes just how Millie walked through fire for her man . . .

3 Skulls – B-

Walk Through Fire is the fourth book in Kristen Ashley’s Chaos series. Since the first book in this series was also my introduction to the author, it has a special place among my favorites. Having said that, it kills me to give this book only three stars. It had some absolutely stunning scenes in it. There’s a particular scene where Millie is finally having her breakdown and letting it all out, and I can’t even describe how wonderfully gut-wrenching this scene was. I was sobbing along with her!

If I was rating this solely on Millie and High’s relationship, it would be a solid five stars for me. I loved it. Everything about it. Even the separation. I love reunited lovers stories. But there were three things that really hindered my enjoyment of this story. One – High’s ex-wife and the relationship she and Millie had. Why is there no middle ground with this author? Either the ex-wife is the ex-wife from hell, or she meets the main character, and they act like long lost sorority sisters. It was nauseating from the moment they met, and it never let up. It was just too incredible for me to believe. I thought the story with his daughters was nice (aside from the bribes.) It took time for Millie to develop a relationship with them, and unlike other KA heroines, I didn’t feel like Millie overstepped her bounds with his children.

Reason number 2 – BIG spoiler ahead. Hey people? This is a spoiler--Fair Warning!

And third – High is a KA hero. You’re telling me that with all that love they were sharing, he just let Millie walk away? He didn’t chase her down and demand to know what the hell was going on? I just can’t get on board with that. Not from a KA man.

So while this book had some wonderful (and sexy as hell) moments, there was a lot about it that just didn’t work for me. But it won’t stop me from continuing with the series, as it’s been an overall win!

Break Me DownBreak Me Down by Roni Loren
Book #8.5 in Loving on the Edge
Genre: Erotica/BDSM
Publication Date: October 20th, 2015
ARC provided by InterMix and Netgalley

Synopsis from Goodreads: Samantha Dunbar needs to forget Gibson Andrews. When he trained her to be a domme, she experienced just how hot things could get with the sexy executive. She was ready to hand him everything—including her heart. But Gibson backed away, declaring them incompatible. He’s a dominant, and Sam’s no submissive.

But after an attack shakes Sam to her core, Gibson tracks her down at her family’s rundown farmhouse and makes her an offer. He’ll stay the week and be hers in every way—a helping hand for the renovation and a willing lover in her bed. He swore he’d never give up control to anyone again, but he hasn’t been able to touch another woman since Sam. Maybe a week alone with her will cure him of his relentless craving.

But one taste only makes them want more, and Sam and Gibson are drawn in deeper than ever. The man who won’t give in has just met the girl who won’t give up…

3 Skulls – B-

Break Me Down is my first read from Roni Loren. It’s part of the Loving on the Edge series, and I have to admit to feeling as though I was missing something. Sam and Gibson had quite the history, but I don’t feel like it was fleshed out enough in this installment. I wonder if there’s more to their story in Gibson’s step-brother’s story, which is an earlier book in this series.

I really liked Sam and Gibson. Sam had a tough time growing up in foster care, but she worked hard to move on make a decent life for herself. It’s not until a disastrous event causes Sam’s past and present to collide that things take a turn for the worse. Gibson was determined to be something he wasn’t, and it’s not until Sam’s incident (and ultimatum,) that he lets his true self out. I’m not usually a fan of ultimatums, but I have to admit that it worked well here. It was clear Sam’s came from a place of desperation, and I think so did Gibson’s accepting it. She was offering something that allowed him to unleash who he really was, and he was desperate to keep her safe. Her ultimatum gave him both of those things; it really showed us a lot about each character.

But there was one thing I just couldn’t move past. Hey people? This is a spoiler--Fair Warning!

However, I very much enjoyed this author’s writing style. Her characters (even in this short story) are very complex and likable, and this was a steamy read.  I’ll be reading more from her.
