Demon Bait by Moira Rogers, Children of the Undying #1
I received this ARC from Moira Rogers…thanks you two awesome peeps!
Marci lives in secret, hiding the gifts that could cost her a secure spot in one of humanity’s underground cities, and access to their virtual world. After all, her chances of avoiding the genetic-testing lotto are better than her chances of surviving topside. The bastard son of a terrifying incubus, lust heats Gabe’s blood and sex fuels his magic. Innate charm and charisma help him navigate the cultural gap between the outcast town he calls home and the human settlements he infiltrates for trade.
His latest mission nets him an unexpected asset–a summoner strong enough to soothe his darkest needs. Trust a half demon, especially one who uses a lockdown to trap them together? Not in this lifetime. Yet Marci can’t resist Gabe’s offer to see her safely to a selective outcast settlement where she can live without fear. The journey alone is as dangerous as the way Gabe makes her heart race, but it could be her one hope of a real life. If only she could be sure Gabe’s telling her the whole truth..
Erika’s Review:
Grade: B
Novella’s are always hard for me to review. On one hand they can have some cool elements, but on the other hand, it’s hard to fully explore a world, or romance. Usually one or the other suffers. Demon Bait by Moira Rogers is a cool introduction to their demon world. I saw they are calling the series “Children of the Undying”. I have to admit, that I am clueless about that title, and I am going to ask Donna and Bree about it
So, now, I was lucky to receive an advanced reader copy of Demon Bait, and it didn’t disappoint. It is a cool world, that is toted by Moira Rogers as “Cyber-Punk Demons with Magic and Mayhem {Ok, so the magic and mayhem are my words} It sounded cool, and it was cool!
Marci and Gabe, where do I start? Gabe is a Half-Breed Demon and Marci has summoner blood. I’m going to interject here for a second and say that I wish this was explained better. This is part of Novella’s that drive me crazy. We are told she has summoner blood, but I have no idea what that means. Is she human? Is she part demon? I understood that she was different, and that demons could ‘scent’ her magic, but what exactly, is so cool about having summoner blood?
Gabe and Marci end up trapped together, and Gabe tells Marci all about life on the demon colony, where demons and summoners live harmoniously together, and he tries to get her to leave with him. Marci, is sick of hiding who she is, and instantly trusts Gabe, so she agrees to go with him to his colony.
It works for the story. It didn’t feel wrong, like he was kidnapping her or anything
Marci and Gabe are pretty steamy together, although they do have sex rather quickly. Again, the woes of a Novella. But again, it worked in the story. One thing I enjoy about Moira Rogers, is that their stories always seem to work.
I am curious more about the world, and the virtual reality aspects. I can’t wait for that to be explored more fully and utilized more often. As it stands, you get enough to wet your palate and not be completly confused, but it really needs more information. How is it used? Why is it used so often? Why is it necessary? Things like that.
There are other characters in Demon Bait, mainly Trip, Zel and Bane. {It was Bane right, the Warrior?} I am most interested in Trip. He is cool!
I liked how Demon Bait ended, and I liked the epilogue. Both added a touch of realism to the coupling of Marci and Gabe. Gabe had to work for Marci and I appreciated that after all they went through.

One of my Favorite Quotes from Demon Bait:
Her eyes glittered with tears. “So why me?”
This time, the words had to be the right ones. Not the prettiest, not the most seductive. Heartfelt and true. “You didn’t leave me in the hallway,” he said finally.
“One look at you, and I knew you spent every second making sure you didn’t stand out. But while everyone else was running, you stopped. For me.”
Demon Bait is an interesting introduction to what I imagine is going to be an awesome world. I can’t wait to read the next novel in the series:
Which Features Zel and Devi.
Hammer Down by Moira Rogers
Children of the Undying #2
The man she meets to arrange one of those under-the-table hauls is complicated…and handsome as hell. Literally. A glimpse of the predator beneath his silver gaze and she’s tempted to break her cardinal rule: never mix business with pleasure.
Zel’s first look at the wild-haired hauler threatens to distract him from his mission–and reminds him just how long it’s been since he got laid. As the leader of an outcast settlement, he can’t afford to trust too easily. Devi’s got a reputation for running a tight, disciplined crew, but her very willingness to deal with him means she has something to hide.
Not to mention a hot, tempting package like her could be the cleverest trap his enemies have ever set.
Warning: Contains demon bars, virtual (and literal) fights to the death, forbidden love, renegade AIs, a badass truck-driving heroine who will do anything to protect her crew and the half-demon warrior who will move heaven and hell to make her his.

I really want to read these! Sounds like such a creative combination of story elements…that "warning" at the end of the blurb for the book is like a summary of all the things I like. LOL
My recent post Let’s Talk About…Prequels
It was cool, and I talked to Bree last night and she said that Hammer Down is a full length novel! WOOT! Awesomeness
