Working Stiff by Rachel Caine

Book purchased from Borders

Review originally posted December 2011

Synopsis from Goodreads: Bryn Davis was killed on the job after discovering her bosses were selling a drug designed to resurrect the dead. Now, revived by that same drug, she becomes an undead soldier in a corporate war to take down the very pharmaceutical company responsible for her new condition…

AH’s Review – 4 Skulls – A

My first impressions of this book were that it was different from most of the urban fantasy books I’ve read. Different, in a good way. Working Stiff is a completely new take on zombies, a far more sinister take than the usual fare.

The premise seems straight out of those medical conspiracy thrillers with Big Pharma as the evil bad guys. Paranoid, secretive characters and evil henchmen round out the cast.

A large pharmaceutical company inadvertently develops a drug that reanimates corpses. Returne must be administered daily or the person decomposes rapidly.  And yes, the drug is really expensive.

The book starts off with our heroine Bryn Davis’ first day of work at her new job at a funeral home. Bryn experiences the absolute worst first day of work ever and ends up dead…and revived. Apparently the funeral home was a black market point of sale for the drug. Bryn is put to work to find the source.

So begins an exciting, action packed thriller. Bryn works with the James Bond-like Joe Fidelis, husband and father of three and contractor to Patrick McCallister. Patrick is the head of security for Pharmadene, the drug company.

It was hard to connect with Bryn. She seemed a little stilted and mechanical. Perhaps it was her recent military exposure in Iraq, I’m not sure. I did enjoy Joe and Patrick as her handlers. Patrick had a rather interesting background that involved a “stately Wayne Manor” complete with an Alfred-like character, Liam.  I loved Manny and Pansy and I wish that they had more time in the story.

If you are looking for something different for your zombie reading pleasure, try Working Stiff.

This is book 1 of the series. The expected publication date of book 2 Two Weeks’ Notice is August 7, 2012. I can’t wait!

AH

AHHi all! Bonjour! I’m AH and I am obsessed with reading. I read all kinds of books, but my favorites are paranormal romance and urban fantasy. What is it about those vampires and shape-shifters? Lately, I seem to be reading a lot of dystopian books as well. Are zombies the new vampire? I hope not. I have 3 boys – all reluctant readers so I tend to read a lot of young adult books aimed at boys. I want them to catch the reading bug too! I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts about books with you. Hope we can discover some great reads together.

  1. I’m so happy when someone else likes Patrick… ummmm, I mean the book, of course. I really enjoyed this, I’m pretty fond of Caine’s writing style, she always pulls me right in. Awesome review, AH! And thanks for the giveaway, of course. (I’m not sure it’s INT, if it isn’t, please just delete my entry)

    • Thanks, Maja! You are reminding me of how much I liked Patrick in this book. I loved all of the secondary characters. I really can’t wait for the next book.

  2. This is a new author and series for me. I would love to win and read this book. I love to read and always looking for new books and authors to check out. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  3. ps no rafflecopter coming up on site.

  4. I read Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series before, and quiet enjoy it. Is this one have “love triangle” between the characters?

    • From what I remember, there is sort of an attraction of Bryn with Joe, but he was happily married. I’d be interested in seeing if Bryn and Patrick develop a relationship (although Bryn is technically dead and that would be squicky, right?)

  5. This looks like a great zombie novel! I’m starting to read more and more of them. Wonderful review!
Thanks for this amazing giveaway chance!! :)

  6. Even though I’m just discovering the zombies tale in UF stories, I think a pharmaceutical element is great for showcasing them. There is so much potential for things to go wrong and exciting. The big Pharma guys get their hands on drugs and they have so much power in influening people. Though ending the first day of work dead sounds pretty interesting too!

    • I think that’s why I liked it so much. In a way it kind of reminded me of Robin Cook’s medical conspiracy thriller books rather than an urban fantasy/science fiction book. When you add Big Pharma into the mix, it really makes for a good thriller. I’ve discovered that there are many different types of zombies this week and I think I like these ones the best because no body parts are falling off and they can’t infect you.

  7. I had NO idea Rachel Caine was writing zombies now. I feel so out of the loop, but I would pick this up on her reputation alone!

    • She really is a good writer and this is different from her other books. I hope you get a chance to read it, Emily.

  8. Not gonna lie….this book has thus far completely eluded my notice thus far. How that is, I have no earthly idea. But that madness must be stopped. ^_^

I’m digging how this book seems to have a different take on zombies. Zombies + corporate life? I’m in.

    • It’s zombies + corporate life + big pharma mixed in with a touch of paranoid internet hacker and a bit of men in black types. It’s a lot of fun if you like the conspiracy theory type of book.
