AH’s Review – 4 Skulls – B+

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Terry Spear and her paranormal romance series. Her werewolf books are a lot of fun to read. Can you think of a series that has both SEALs and Highlanders? Well, the Heart of the Wolf series does. So when I saw Hero of a Highland Wolf available for review, I jumped at the chance to read and share my love of this series. I mean, come on, Scottish Highland Castles, nicely oiled brawny werewolves in kilts, sword fights – who could ask for more?

As in the previous books, Hero of a Highland Wolf focuses on a main couple: Grant MacQuarrie and Colleen Playfair. Grant’s pack are the caretakers of Farriage Castle which Colleen has just inherited. Grant is afraid that Colleen will turn his pack out so he hatches a plan: Scare Colleen off by staging a sword fight and medieval feast so that she will refuse to stay at the castle. The joke’s on Grant as Colleen is best friends with Julia who has let Colleen know about the plans. She takes out her video camera and films the men’s sword play. Men – 0, Women – 1.

This book was a lot of fun to read, especially once Grant acknowledges that he is attracted to Colleen. The romance builds slowly and is punctuated by misunderstandings and danger. When they finally get together, the two are smoking hot!

The supporting cast was wonderful. I loved the camaraderie of the members of the pack, especially when they helped push Grant towards mating Colleen (they even signed a petition).  The ladies’ pirate party was a hoot, especially when the men crashed the party.

What’s nice about these books is that you really do not need to read each book in the series consecutively. Each book stands on its own, however for optimal reading pleasure, you’ll want to read them all. If you have not yet had a chance to read this series, go ahead and start with this book. It will give you a nice taste of the author’s writing and her wonderful sense of humor.

Oh, what do Highland wolves wear under their kilts? You guessed it!

As an added bonus, here’s a little excerpt of the book:

Grant always joked and played with his clansmen when they were through with their work for the day. Well, even while they worked. But being with Colleen here like this felt different. For a moment, he didn’t feel like he served as the manager of her estates while she was the owner and taskmaster. He felt like a man with a woman on a Sunday jaunt in the glen. Except she wasn’t just any woman. She was a she-wolf, her cute little arse jiggling ahead of him as he climbed the hill to join her.

When he reached the top, she was trying to catch her breath and swayed a little. He grabbed her arm, and he didn’t know what came over him. But suddenly he was looking down into her smiling face, as if she was smiling at him, and he wanted in the worst way to kiss her.

She didn’t pull away from him, either.

He shouldn’t kiss her, but damn, he wanted to.

Still breathing hard, her heart beating fast, she placed her hand on his chest. He expected her to push him away, but she didn’t. She just stood there looking up at him, waiting for him to do something. He breathed in her scent, all woman and…interested.

They stood high on top of the hill overlooking the glen, the water rushing by, the sheep grazing on the green grass across the burn, and white clouds passing overhead against the blue sky.

He still had hold of her arm, but then he released her, cupped her face with both hands, and kissed her.

When his lips met hers, he knew he shouldn’t do this. He intended to make it sweet and unassuming, to quench some damnable need that he had to satisfy. He didn’t presume it would go anywhere, and he almost imagined it would be lame and unappealing—-after having built up the expectation that kissing that sweet mouth of hers would make his world spin and topple over. He hadn’t thought she’d crave the intimacy as much as he did. Yet when she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back, she exhibited an eagerness that turned his world on end.

She was more than willing.

  • Love this series, one of my favorites. Very eager to read this one, love Highlanders.

  • I love that they are loyal, protective, and great accent.

  • I love highlanders because of their love for family nature & honor. They have a code & would rather die then break it, the kilts & brough are a plus hahahahaha

  • Sexy accent! Sexy Kilts! Sexy Wolves! Sexy Vampires! Sexy Sexy Sexy! Thanks for sharing your review and this great series.

  • I love them because they are dedicated to what is right. They are also honorable, trustworthy, loyal, look great in a kilt, and the authors always make them so very, very sexy (okay, that’s an extra…). The fact that this book also includes the shifter aspect makes it especially desirable. I love my shifters!

  • I love highlanders for the idea of their sense of honor, dedication to their homes, families, and people, and rippling muscles!

I’d never heard of Terry Spear & her Highlander werewolf SEALs! How can I have missed this?? Thanks so much for this introduction to a new series!

    • Oh, you are in for a treat! And the bonus is, you really don’t have to start at book 1. I haven’t even read that one yet (though I will eventually). You can even skip around the series, too. She also does crossover with her Jaguar shifter series as well.
