Genre Book Showdown: Emilie and the Hollow World vs Spellbinding

This month I read two standalone, YA fantasies that skew toward a younger audience and today they meet in the Genre Book Showdown.  Who will take home the win?  Will it be Emilie and the Hollow World by Martha Wells, a steampunk-infused fantasy set in a land at the center of the Earth?  Or will it be Spellbinding by Maya Gold which threads the people and stories of Salem into an all-new world of witches?  Read on to see who is declared the victor!   Emilie and the Hollow World by Martha Wells Genre: YA Fantasy Publication Date: 2 April 2013 ARC [ Read More of this Review ]

ARC Review: Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

ARC Review: Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff Book 1 in The Lotus War Book provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press Release Date: September 18, 2012 AH’s Review – 5 Skulls – A Stormdancer is one of those books that took a while for the story to unfold. At first, I was a little frustrated by the endless vocabulary in Japanese. I realize that there was a glossary available at the end of the book however an e-ARC does have some limitations. Flipping back and forth just wasn’t an option. At times, I felt like abandoning the book. So why did [ Read More of this Review ]

New Release Review: Riveted by Meljean Brook

New Release Review: Riveted by Meljean Brook Book 3 in The Iron Seas Series Book provided by Edelweiss and Penguin Books AH’s Review – 5 Skulls – A There is so much to love about Meljean Brook’s The Iron Seas series. Each book stands on its own so you really don’t need to read the books in order. The world is imaginative and original and an alternative history to our own. For a brief synopsis of this world, I would recommend that you look at the author’s website for her Iron Seas Guide. Riveted is steampunk done right. Oh, the [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Heart of Steel by Meljean Brook

Heart of Steel by Meljean Brook Book two Book purchased from Book Depository   AH’s Review: 5 Stars – A As I picked up this book, I was giddy with anticipation. Would it be as good as The Iron Duke? Would it be better? And my answer is…I loved this book more than The Iron Duke. Reading this book made me happy. I had a goofy grin on my face. I didn’t really think much of Archimedes Fox in the last book. Didn’t think he would survive being tossed out to the zombies. Archimedes Fox is full of [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel

Dearly, Departed by Lia Habel Book received from Netgalley.    AH’s Review Grade: C+ – Dearly, Departed could have been a most awesome book. It has a lot of good things going for it: a great cast of characters and an engaging story. The author has a quirky sense of humor and I did chuckle at some parts. The dialogue was entertaining as well. How could you go wrong with steampunk and zombies? Let’s start with what I liked.  I liked Nora and her best friend Pamela. These two girls were quite independent and brave. I loved that they [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Dead Iron by Devon Monk

Dead Iron by Devon Monk Purchased from Book Depository   AH’s Review Grade – B Matics, Witches, and Weres, oh my! I like steampunk. I’m always fascinated by the creativity and usefulness of all those wacky steam powered contraptions and gadgets. I’m not too keen on Westerns. I usually don’t seek out that genre, unless there is a sexy cowboy involved. But I digress. This is a hard book for me to review. I enjoyed it immensely once I got into it, but I recognize that it may not be for everyone. Dead Iron was different from the other [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Goliath by Scott Westerfeld

AH’s Review – 4.5 stars –  A Barking spiders! What a great way to end a series! I want more! The third and final book in Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan series did not disappoint. Set during WWI, our heroes Dylan (actually Deryn, a young woman) and Alek are on board the living airship the Leviathan (a giant floating whale!) as it flies eastward towards the orient and beyond. Goliath is an alternative history and retelling of WWI. History buffs will enjoy this book as they see some of the historical characters of the period appear in this book. Badlands by Seleste DeLaney

For a Novella, this was great. I would LOVE to see this world explored more fully. I am completely interested in learning more about the Badlands. The majority of this novel took place aboard the Dark Hawk Ship, manned by Captain Spencer Pierce. Amongst the crew; Henri {Medic} Zeke {Warrior/Weapons} Noah {Mechanic}. This novel made subtle references to steam punk, it wasn’t all gadgets, gizmos and glorified steam engines. Moreover, this novel was more Romance based. I liked Ever. She was very strong, and loyal to her lands and queen. The problem I had with Ever lay with Zeke, but [ Read More of this Review ]
