Genre Book Showdown: The Boyfriend vs The Gray Ghost Murders

I recently read two ARCs (advance reader copies) from the crime/mystery genre.  The Boyfriend by Thomas Perry followed the investigation of a serial killer targeting female escorts that all happened to fit the same physical profile.  The Gray Ghost Murders by Keith McCafferty featured the discovery of human remains in a remote Montana location and the resulting investigation.  Both of these books were good reads, but read on to see which novel wins this crime-filled showdown!   The Boyfriend by Thomas Perry Publication Date: 5 March 2013 ARC Provided by Netgalley and Mysterious Press Synopsis from Goodreads: Jack Till, who has retired from [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Zero Hour by Jordan Castillo Price

Zero Hour by Jordan Castillo Price *ebook purchased from JCP Books* Regina’s Rating: 4 stars/Grade A- Blurb: Ernest just turned thirty. It’s time for retirement, freedom from the tedious drudgery of his job as a data clerk. Time to explore parts of the city he’s never seen before, and hopefully meet some actual people. And at the end of the month? Time to die. Will runs the counter at the historic coffee shop, and when he talks, he sounds just like an old-time data feed. Tongues are for talking, and Will’s got plenty to say. He’s nothing like anyone Ernest [ Read More of this Review ]

ARC Review: Out for Blood by Kristen Painter

Out for Blood by Kristen Painter Book #4 in the House of the Comarré series Publication Date: 30 Oct 2012 ARC Provided by Netgalley and Orbit Christal’s Review – 4 Skulls – B+ OUT FOR BLOOD is the fourth book in the House of Comarré series and I really enjoyed it.  The pace was quicker, the POV changes were handled more smoothly, and the plotlines were integrated much better. Chrysabelle has had the Ring of Sorrows melted down and stitched into her skin as signum.  It is giving her some odd powers, but she is still more concerned about searching for her brother.  At [ Read More of this Review ]

ARC Review: The Map of the Sky by Felix J. Palma Book 2 in Triologia Victoriana Book provided by Edelweiss and Atria Books Release date: September 4, 2012     AH’s Review – 5 Skulls – A HG Wells, time travel, aliens, oh my! The Map of the Sky by Felix J. Palma is a fascinating read. The author is a master storyteller, taking the theme of HG Well’s War of the Worlds and expanding upon that story to create a more frightening tale. What if “Martians” really did land on Earth? What if they really had those deadly tripod [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Flesh and Blood by Kristen Painter

Flesh and Blood by Kristen Painter Book borrowed from library Christal’s Review – 3.5 Skulls – B- Flesh and Blood is the second in the House of Comarré series. It picks up about two weeks after the events of Blood Rights. I didn’t find this book to be quite as strong as the first, but I still really enjoyed it. The main reason this book didn’t work as well for me was the amount of POV changes. There seemed to be twice as many narrators in this book and the POV switches always occurred right when something big was about [ Read More of this Review ]

The Persistence of Memory (Mnevermind #1) by Jordan Castillo Price *e-book purchased from Amazon* Regina’s Rating and Review: 5 Skulls, Grade A   Jordan Castillo Price has done it again.  It is no secret I am a huge fan of her Psycop series, my fanship is such that I am purposely holding back from reading the last published book in that series, GhosTV, until the next in the series is published.  I am that fearful of being without a Jordan Castillo Price book in my favorite series.  Well, I now have a new series of hers to follow.  The Persistence of [ Read More of this Review ]

ARC Review: A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer

ARC Review: A Blood Seduction by Pamela Palmer Book 1 in Vampire City series Book provided by Edelweiss and Harper Collins Release Date: May 29, 2012  AH’s Review – 4 Skulls – A I wouldn’t want to meet the vampires from Pamela Palmer’s newest series. The vampires in A Blood Seduction are a bloodthirsty lot. These vampires are truly evil – they feed on emotions as well as blood. They are sadistic and revel in their “foods’” pain. Vampires are not the only monsters in this world. There are huge, hungry werewolves, Rippers (vampires with no conscience), and Traders who [ Read More of this Review ]

ARC Review: The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro

The Claimed by Caridad Pinero Sin Hunters Series Release Date: May 1, 2012 Book provided by Netgalley and the Grand Central Publishing AH’s Review – 3 Skulls – C+ The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro is the second book in her Sin Hunters series. This book focuses on Victoria Johnson, a Light Hunter and Christopher Sombrosa, a Shadow Hunter. The Light Hunters and Shadow Hunters have been at odds for centuries, probably because the Shadow Hunters feed from their Light Hunter cousins. I must admit that this book was confusing at first. So many terms are thrown at the reader: Anaru, [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Fractured Moon by E.R. Pierce

Fractured Moon by E.R. Pierce Book 1 in the Steel Series Purchased from Amazon   Michelle, the Bookshelf Stalker’s Review – 4.5 Skulls – B+ I’ve read plenty of books. Of those books, about 90% have paranormal elements to them. Because the majority of my books are paranormal books, you have repeat supernatural creatures. By far, the most often used supernatural creature in my book collection is….drum-roll please….. the werewolf. I know, you were thinking vampire. You were wrong. I like werewolves. They can be more animal-like, portrayed by the author similar to your standard wolf or they [ Read More of this Review ]

Interview with Author ER Pierce

Welcome to Badass Book Reviews, author E.R Pierce.   What inspired you to write Fractured Moon?   ER Pierce: It’s hard to say, I wish I knew where ideas and creativity came from. They {Aurelia and Ceithin} jumped and latched onto my brain and wouldn’t let go. I tried to shake them loose. I tried to ignore them, but when they intruded on my already precious sleep time, I gave in and started writing. I’ll say that the story originated as something completely different and morphed into what you’ll read today. What was your biggest fear in writing [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix

Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix Book 1 in Hoodoo series Book Purchased from Borders AH’s Review – 4 Stars – A – Black Dust Mambo is a dark and sultry tale. Set in New Orleans during May Madness Carnival (think Spring Break for people with magical abilities), Black Dust Mambo has just the right amount of mystery and magic to keep me reading late into the night. Imagine…the partying, the debauchery…a young woman’s first May Madness Carnival…all kinds of fun. And murder, black magic style. Kallie Riviere wakes up to find her companion for the evening very dead. The victim’s best friend [ Read More of this Review ]

Review: The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

The Dead and the Gone (Last Survivors #2) by Susan Beth Pfeffer Audio Book Borrowed From Library Regina’s Review – 3 Stars – Grade C I wavered between 2 and 3 stars. But I am a sucka so 3 stars it is. In case you fail to get the wrong idea from reading this review, I have enjoyed reading this series and thinking about the series. These books are like crack! Review: Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Life as We Know It (Last Survivors #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer Audio Book Borrowed From Library Regina’s Review – 4 Stars – Grade B   Pfeffer writes about the break down of society, government and life as we knew it due to a series of natural disasters. Unlike other apocalypse themed books where the breakdown happens immediately and citizens are on their own from the beginning, Life as We Knew It describes a gradual downturn of society. And in that way, the decline feels more realistic but it is also more frightening. If things were to go wayward in our current modern civilization, [ Read More of this Review ]
