Here at Badass, we love Halloween – the creepiness, the costumes, the television specials, and of course, the candy. But as readers, we have a special place in our hearts for Halloween-spirited reads, especially the horror ones. So we wanted to put together a few recommendations to get you in the holiday mood!
NOS4A2 by Joe Hill – I’m not a big Stephen King fan, but this story from his son, Joe Hill, blew me away. You can guess from the title that it is about vampires, but it’s done in a completely unique way. Mr Hill definitely has a way with unsettling descriptions and uncomfortable situations, but he also created some phenomenal characters. Charlie Manx will surely be a star for many nightmares to come!
Red Right Hand by Levi Black – Red Right Hand slaps you with the violence and gore right off the bat and doesn’t let up! It’s unique, a little bit kooky, and infused with the creepiness that Lovecraft did so well. Though this leans more towards urban fantasy than horror, there is more than enough nightmare fuel contained in these 304 pages. The descriptions of the Lovecraftian gods can be pretty sick and twisted so this one is not for the squeamish.
Angelfall by Susan Ee – I’m cheating a bit here, because this story is more suspenseful than scary. The more horrific elements don’t come into play until near the end of this book, but I’m adding it anyway because it’s ‘scary good.’ I was never a fan of SciFi, but this book pulled me in and made me want to find more books in the genre that I loved. If you keep going to the second book, there’s even more creepiness and horror to be had.
The Troop by Nick Cutter – I don’t need to be afraid of monsters – it’s the parasites that really freak me out. The Troop will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a fast paced character driven survival story. It’ll make you think twice before you set off on a camping trip on a remote island….
There you have them! Some reads we think are perfect to cozy up with this Halloween! What do you think? Is there a book you think would be a perfect read for this time of year? Let us know in the comments.
