Book Synopsis:

They are the Sentinels. Three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind, each possessing unique abilities in their battle to protect humanity against their eternal foes: the Synestryn. Now a warrior must protect a strong-minded woman from an incredible evil…A beautiful, independent Theronai, Rory Rainey knows that her attempts to be a warrior are futile—unless she can stop the demonic visions that torment her. Determined to be free, Rory sets out to find the mysterious guardian who can cure her, before she loses her sight—or her life. But Rory’s journey brings its own dangers when she is attacked by a pack of Synestryn sent by the demon lord Raygh.

Cornered and desperate, Rory narrowly escapes with the help of a sword-wielding stranger. Cain knows that Rory needs his protection to survive, just as he knows that her power is compatible with his own. And when Rory binds herself to Cain, the warrior knows he will do anything to keep her safe from the threat of the demon lord that pursues her…

Welcome Shannon! We’re very excited to have you here with us at Badass Book Reviews!

Regina: You write in two unique genres:  paranormal romance with a heavy fantasy/science fiction element and romantic suspense, is it hard to go back and forth between these two worlds?  Or perhaps it is refreshing?

Shannon:  I really like switching between series. Not only does it keep things interesting for me as a writer so I don’t get bored, I think the genres have a way of strengthening each other. Writing suspense has helped make my paranormals more action-packed, while writing the paranormals helps add a layer of creativity to the suspenses that might not have otherwise been there. They really complement each other well.

Regina:  One of the things I really enjoy about the Sentinel Wars series is that while romance and a happily ever after for a specific couple is the focus of each book, the fantasy element of the world is highly developed and detailed.  What are your influences for this series?

Shannon:  I grew up reading fantasy and science fiction, and I’m a big ol’ tabletop gaming nerd, so those things have probably influenced my world building the most. When I started reading romances as an adult, I naturally was drawn to paranormal romances and saw the way complex and fantastic worlds led to new and exciting stories. I think it was inevitable that I would eventually end up using my nerdy powers for love stories. J

Regina:  One of the interesting twists of your take on paranormal romance is that the male warrior is dying and needs to be rescued by a specific female.  This is something I really enjoy.  It makes Sentinel Wars stand out as unique.  I guess this isn’t a question but more of a compliment.

Shannon:  Thanks! I was hoping that facet of the world was something readers would enjoy. J

Regina: What projects are you currently working on?

Shannon:  I’m working on book 8 of the Sentinel Wars, currently titled WILLING SACRIFICE. It’s Torr’s story and one I’ve been building up to for a long time, so it’s really fun that I’m finally able to put it on paper. I just hope it comes out as good on paper as it is in my head. That’s always the challenge.

I also just finished revisions on my contribution to the KICKING IT anthology, and am tinkering with some new paranormal worlds that are still in development. I hope to have more time to devote to them soon.

Regina: Where do you see the Sentiel Wars series going?  How many more books do you anticipate writing?

Shannon:  I’ve always planned for the Sentinel Wars to be between 12-15 books, with a few shorter stories mixed in here and there. I designed wiggle room in the middle to contract or expand, but the series has a definite end. Once I reach that point, I’ll have told all the stories I want to tell in that world and plan to move on to some new worlds that I’ve been developing.

Regina: I am guessing that many fans of yours many be interested in writing habits, can you give us an idea of any writing rituals and habits that you have?

Shannon:  Writing is my day job, so I basically get up and start working. Coffee is definitely a necessity, but other than that, there’s not much I need to get going. I know that’s probably boring, so maybe I should work on making up some bizarre ritual involving golf balls and chicken gizzards. Food for thought…

Regina: What books do you enjoy to read?

Shannon:  I tend to read what I write: paranormal romance and romantic suspense. I enjoy books with big, complex worlds and large casts of characters, as well as shorter works that just dip their toe into strange and fun settings. If it’s well-written, emotionally intense and has a happy ending, it’s my kind of story.

Regina: I know that writing is the type of career that requires a lot of time and focus but … when you have free time, what do you enjoy to do on a Friday night?

Shannon:  As I said before, I’m a gamer nerd, so my friends and I usually gather around my dining table and play tabletop role-playing games, like D&D, or quirky card games, like Cards Against Humanity. Over the years we’ve found that the game is less important than the company, so we always laugh and have a great time, no matter what the game may be. And if I’m not gaming, I’m usually playing with my shiny, sparkly beads. So many beads, so little time. J

  • Favorite paranormal romance? I have quite a few, but must say that Dark Lover/JR Ward is near the top.

  • Great interview and a wonderful giveaway.

  • lover awakened by JR Ward

  • Jeaniene Frost’s One Foot in the Grave.

  • My favorite paranormal romance novel is probably The Darkest Whisper by Gena Showalter although since stumbling across SKB’s works I would have to say Living Nightmare was most excellent! Love your stuff Shannon! Keep up the good work.

  • Romance is not my big genre read, but Shannon K. Butcher kicks it up a notch for me, especially for her TSW series. I love the premise behind the the Sentinels, and I love her sassy heroines and the fact that even if people are inveigling their dialog? There is a logic to it. She never makes a character act out of character to further plot! Kudos for Ms Butcher and her great series! (Allof them)

  • I’m a fantasy reader from way back so the jump to paranormal was easy. I think Jayne Ann krentz’s arcane books were my first true paranormal s….. I love Shannon’s jewelry…. I won a piece by her at the Brenda Novak auction last year and get a lot of compliments!

  • The Sentinel series started my journey into paranormal romances, so they will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart and are the basis for which I judge all others to. I have just begun the dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon which are good, but not nearly as good as Shannon’s! One of the the things i really have enjoyed with The Sentinel series are the side storied in each one. The arc of Torr and Grace’s story of several books was something I really looked forward to with the release of the next book. i am glad they will be getting their own book soon, but will miss them as a side story. What ever happened to that human couple that Logan manipulated into getting together that snow filled night? Shannon, as long as you keep writing them, I will keep looking forward to them…………. :o)

  • “A Hunger Like No Other” will always be one of my favorite paranormal romances because that’s the first one I ever read and it hooked me on PNR forever! I’m fairly new to Shannon’s books, but I love them. I’m so happy to hear there will be a lot more to read! Thanks for the chance to win one!

  • My favorite paranormal romance series is actually a tie between the Psy/Changeling and Guild Hunter series both by Nalini Singh. This interview has me really intrigued about The Sentinel Wars series. Looking forward to checking this PNR series out. Thanks for the chance to win the latest book!

  • My favorite paranormal romance series is the Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands. I am open to other books though and usually buy the back story books if I like one that I win.
