ARC Review:  Hanging by a Thread by Sophie Littlefield
Book provided by NetGalley and Random House
Release Date: September 11, 2012

Synopsis from Goodreads: Summer is the best part of the year in Winston, California, and the Fourth of July is the highlight of the season. But the perfect town Clare remembers has changed, and everyone is praying that this summer will be different from the last two—that this year’s Fourth of July festival won’t see one of their own vanish without a trace, leaving no leads and no suspects. The media are in a frenzy predicting a third disappearance, but the town depends on tourist dollars, so the residents of Winston are trying desperately to pretend nothing’s wrong.

And they’re not the only ones hiding something.

Clare, a seamstress who redesigns vintage clothing, has been blessed—or perhaps cursed—with a gift: she can see people’s pasts when she touches their clothes. When she stumbles across a denim jacket that once belonged to Amanda Stavros, last year’s Fourth of July victim, Clare sees her perfect town begin to come apart at the seams.

In a town where appearance means everything, how deep beneath the surface will Clare dig to uncover a murderer?

AH’s Review – 3 Stars – C+

I was quite excited to get an advance reader copy of Hanging by a Thread. I loved Sophie Littlefield’s Aftertime series and I have her other books on my bloated to-read list as well. While I liked Hanging by a Thread, it was a bit disappointing for me. Perhaps it was because it was nothing at all like Aftertime. Perhaps it was because it was a young adult book and some of the teenage antics did make me roll my eyes a few times.

The premise of this book is intriguing. Clare Raley is a 16 year old with a special gift: She has a sort of psychic connection to already worn and vintage clothing. A mere touch and she experiences what the original wearer felt. The images are vivid and sometimes cause her to pass out. So far, so good – sounds interesting.

The book is bogged down by a lot of details about sewing, fabric, garment construction, and vintage buttons and accessories. Personally, this did not bother me because I like to sew. However, it does give this book a limited appeal to audiences that are into fashion design, vintage clothing, and the like.

I did like Clare. It was refreshing that a young girl could be so creative and such a talented seamstress. I had mixed feelings about her choice in boyfriends. Jack came across as a bad boy.

With regards to the plot itself, I did find it frustrating that in a small town with a supposed serial killer on the loose the parents didn’t seem to protect their children. My kids would not have been allowed out at all.

Hanging by a Thread is a well written book. While I enjoyed this book, it may not appeal to all readers.

Rating:  ☠  ☠  ☠  ☠  ☠

AH

AHHi all! Bonjour! I’m AH and I am obsessed with reading. I read all kinds of books, but my favorites are paranormal romance and urban fantasy. What is it about those vampires and shape-shifters? Lately, I seem to be reading a lot of dystopian books as well. Are zombies the new vampire? I hope not. I have 3 boys – all reluctant readers so I tend to read a lot of young adult books aimed at boys. I want them to catch the reading bug too! I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts about books with you. Hope we can discover some great reads together.
