april-fools-part 2Besides jokes and pranks, April Fools’ Day is a day to laugh. That’s why again this year, we’re sharing a list of 12 books in many different genres that have made us Badass ladies laugh (feel free to also check the first iteration of this list.) Whether is parody, slapstick, comedy of manners, witticisms, sarcasm or clever comebacks, we’re sure you’ll find something in this list to your liking, no matter what kind of humor you enjoy.

the rosie projectThe Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
Genre: Fiction

D.G.: The Rosie Project is a quirky, funny, feel good story with a great message: how to understand others by seeing things from their point of view. Don Tillman, the main character, has given up on dating until a friend’s comment makes him realize that he needs a new approach to finding a wife: a questionnaire where he will “filter out the time wasters, the disorganized, the ice cream discriminators, the visual harassment complainers, the crystal gazers, the horoscope readers, the fashion obsessives, the religious fanatics, the vegans, the sports watchers, the creationists, the smokers, the scientific illiterate, the homeopaths.” As Don starts meeting prospective women for the Wife Project and helping a woman (Rosie) find her long lost father, hilarious situations ensue.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “Research consistently shows that the risks to health outweigh the benefits of drinking alcohol. My argument is that the benefits to my mental health justify the risks.”

50shamesofearlgrey Fifty Shames of Earl Grey by Fanny Merkin a.k.a Andrew Shaffer
Genre: Parody

AH: Ms. Merkin aka Andrew Shaffer has nailed it! Her parody of that other book is hilarious! Fifty Shames of Grey captures the essence of the two main characters very well. Edward Christian Earl Grey is rich, powerful, and a Dungeon Master! Yup – he’s a master of live action role playing. His type of BSDM involves bards, dragons, sorcery, and magick. Bella Ana Anna Steal is her usual klutzy, clueless self. She even has an Inner Guidette doing backflips and running on a hamster wheel.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “For the first time in my life, I have found my purpose: to be a doormat for this ridiculously wealthy, attractive, impossible to resist man.”

MidnightMidnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Regina: Midnight Riot is great start to a series and also is simply a fabulous new series for the urban fantasy world. This book is funny, not silly funny like Three’s Company, but dry funny with an amazing delivery. Ben Aaronvitch makes very witty observations about human nature and delivers in such a way that it is funny. At the same time, he sets up an intriguing urban fantasy world, playing on existing mythology and bringing new stuff in. He even makes a few Harry Potter jokes.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “Being a seasoned Londoner, Martin gave the body the “London once-over” – a quick glance to determine whether this was a drunk, a crazy or a human being in distress. The fact that it was entirely possible for someone to be all three simultaneously is why good-Samaritanism in London is considered an extreme sport – like BASE jumping or crocodile wrestling.”

The Lives of TaoThe Lives of Tao
Genre: Science Fiction

Christal: The Lives of Tao by Wesley Chu was a very interesting take on aliens and the body snatcher archetype. The narrative was extremely funny and the characters were all very well developed. I was enthralled by Mr. Chu’s debut and think it is one of the top science fiction books I read in 2013. His prose was cleanly done and the conversations between the characters were peppered with hilarious and insightful quips.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “Besides, criminal masterminds are people too. They need groceries and cable like the rest of us.”

remember_when4Remember When by Emma Chase
Genre: New Adult

Angie: Though Remember When dealt with some serious issues, it was filled with humor and those euphoric feelings that accompany first love. Layla and Trip’s story was so sweet. It had me reaching for the second book before I was even done with the first!

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “Are you there, God? It’s me, Layla. I know I just jerked off some guy who is not even my boyfriend in the bathroom of this crappy, brown house. But if you could find a way to kill me quickly and painlessly within the next ten seconds, I promise to never touch another penis again. Well, I’ll be dead, so, I guess I promise not to whore it up in heaven. Which, of course is where you’ll be sending me, right? I mean I’d hate to think you’d deny me an eternity behind your pearly gates just because of one impetuous handjob. Thank you. Sincerely, Layla Warren. Amen.”

Someone Killed his EditorSomebody Killed His Editor by Josh Lanyon
Genre: M/M

Wendy: Somebody Killed His Editor touched on all of the keys to a successful story. It had funny and interesting characters – Christopher Holmes is sarcastic and snarky; full of quick one liners in response to the people he interacted with, but also about himself. It had a romance that made you get a little smile and covet the small moments between them. It had a pretty decent throwback mystery series.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “I didn’t approve of murder on general principles. Not even of people who seemed to go around begging for it.”

TangledTangled by Emma Chase
Genre: Contemporary Romance

AH: Tangled is a humorous look at falling in love from a man’s point of view. Being inside of Drew’s head was hilarious and I enjoyed this book about a player deciding that he’s found his perfect soul mate and screwing up so badly he needs to grovel, beg forgiveness, fill an office with flowers and balloons, and more.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “For God’s sake, don’t let her watch Cinderella. What kind of example is that? A mindless twit who can’t even remember where she left her damn shoe, so she has to wait for some douchebag in tights to bring it to her? Give me a frigging break!”

crocodile on the sandbankCrocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters
Genre: Historical Mystery

D.G.: Crocodile on the Sandbank is a historical mystery set in Egypt with a mummy as the villain. Did you see why I had to read it? The characters are delightful – confident Amelia & irascible Emerson are a riot together – and the book has such a funny turn of phrase – when the mummy was described as Evelyn’s “necromantic admirer”, I couldn’t stop laughing.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh:
Emerson: “An Englishman’s duty is to preserve icy detachment under any and all circumstances. Even if he were being boiled to provide a cannibal’s dinner, it would be incumbent upon him to…”
Amelia: “I would expect that you would be taking notes on the dietary habits of aborigines as the water bubbled around your neck.”

noble intentionsNoble Intentions by Katie MacAlister
Genre: Historical Romance

AH: If you’ve never read a historical romance or were afraid to do so, this zany comedy might be a good place to start. Noble Intentions has an eccentric cast of characters including two farting dogs, the Tremayne triplets, a butler who looks and sounds like a pirate, four mistresses, and the list goes on. Gillian brings all the characters together and manages to control the temper (sometimes) of her newlywed husband Noble as forces work to destroy his reputation. A hilarious read with some really madcap situations.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “Very well, our watchword is testicle. Should you encounter someone who does not answer your cry of ‘Halt, who goes there?’ with a snappy ‘testicle,’ you will restrain him and shout for assistance.”

AttachmentsAttachments by Rainbow Rowell
Genre: Fiction

Regina: How does Rainbow do it every time with a book? She writes real people in just normal situations and somehow comes out with a really good story and message. Attachments is slightly different than her other more heavy books, while there is a heavy topic in this book (depression), it is funny. Imagine a guy whose job it is to read emails of his coworkers at work for security reasons and he starts to enjoy what he does too much. There are a lot of funny and silly situations that arise in this really good book. I listened to it, the performance is done really well.

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: “I really am happy for Kiley. And for you and every other happily married lady. Except for that I’m not happy for you. I kind of want you all to drop dead.”

Love IrresistiblyLove Irresistibly by Julie James
Genre: Contemporary Romance

D.G.: Love Irresistibly is full of the trademark Julie James humor, with great chemistry between the Hero and Heroine, some emotional depth, awesome best friends and believable/well researched business situations. There are hilarious situations specially what happened with the “Ten Rules of Casual Sex.” I almost DIED laughing.

Quotes That Will Make You Laugh: Sure, because nothing said ‘I like but don’t you love you’ like a ‘just because’ vibrator.”

the adventures of tom sawyerThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Genre: Classics

D.G.: The situations in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer reminded me a lot of my childhood because I also grew up poor in a rural environment with no toys or regimentation so my cousins and I had to find our own amusements. While listening to this book, I couldn’t stop laughing (people in the subway kept looking at me like I was a weirdo.) Some of conversations between the boys were simply hysterical, like the one where they’re discussing their future life as robber.:

Quote That Will Make You Laugh: A robber is more high-toned than what a pirate is — as a general thing. In most countries they’re awful high up in the nobility — dukes and such.
